The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 2 of Joint Task Force Northwest Operation Fansan Yamma, Paul Bemgha Koughna, has on Thursday reaffirmed the military’s resolve to deepen collaboration with the media as part of a broader national strategy to combat insurgency and terrorism in Nigeria’s Northwest.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel, Sokoto State, at the 8 Division Headquarters, the GOC described the media as a strategic stakeholder in the country’s security architecture.

He emphasized that contemporary security challenges require a blend of kinetic operations and non kinetic approaches, including information management, public engagement, and community trust building.

“The media remains a vital bridge between the military and the civilian population,” Major General Koughna said.

“Through accurate, balanced and factual reportage, you help counter misinformation and ensure that Nigerians are properly informed about ongoing security efforts.”

He noted that professional journalism plays a decisive role in preventing panic, discouraging sensationalism, and strengthening national unity, particularly at a time when coordinated efforts are required to confront evolving security threats.

The GOC assured that the 8 Division would continue to prioritize civil-military relations initiatives, including humanitarian support programmes designed to foster cooperation and build confidence among communities across the Northwest.

Providing an update on recent security concerns, he disclosed that calm has returned to Tidibale village following reports of residents fleeing due to security fears, affirming that the area is now safe for normal activities.

“All is well. The community is secured and residents can go about their daily routines without fear,” he stated.

Earlier, Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel in Sokoto State, Mr. Ankeli Emmanuel, said the visit was aimed at strengthening the working relationship between the media and the military in the interest of national peace and development.

He pledged continued objective coverage of military operations, especially during challenging security situations, noting that responsible journalism remains critical to Nigeria’s stability and progress.

The engagement underscores a growing recognition that beyond battlefield successes, effective communication and public trust are indispensable pillars in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against terrorism and insecurity.
