Nigeria’s electricity supply has declined to 3,200 megawatts following the ongoing strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced.
The operator said the industrial action triggered severe gas shortages, cutting generation from over 4,300MW. To cushion the shortfall, it said hydro power plants were ramped up, adding more than 400MW to the grid.
NISO explained that real-time load adjustments, reactive power support, and reserve monitoring were being deployed to keep the system stable.
It added that selective load shedding was introduced only as a last measure to prevent a nationwide blackout and ensure equitable distribution.
“These measures have helped sustain grid integrity and preserve supply to critical facilities despite the labour-induced disruptions,” the agency stated.
NISO assured consumers of its continued commitment to proactive grid management and reliable electricity delivery even under challenging conditions.
