The singer revealed on Monday that Mariah Carey’s sister Alison and mother, Patricia, passed away on the same day.

“I lost my mother this past weekend, and I’m devastated. My sister tragically passed away on the same day, according to a statement released by the Grammy-winning musician.

The statement went on, “I feel fortunate that I got to spend the last week with my mom before she passed away.” “During this impossible time, I appreciate everyone’s love, support, and respect for my privacy.”

According to a Times Union story published on Monday, Alison, who was mainly distant from Carey, passed away at the age of 63 from issues related to her organ function while receiving hospice care.

The news was initially published by People Magazine.

Patricia was a Juilliard-trained opera singer who Carey credits as an inspiration to her from a young age.

To my mother’s delight, I would sing tiny tunes around the house. And she consistently gave me encouragement,” the 2020 memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey” reads.

The singer’s father, Alfred Roy Carey, was Patricia’s former spouse. The vocalist of “Vision of Love” was three when her parents got divorced. After her parents divorced, Carey spent the majority of her childhood years living with her mother in Suffolk County, Long Island. At age 72, her father passed away from cancer in 2002.

In her biography, Carey described her difficult connection with both her mother and her sister. She said that her sister had been placing her in dangerous circumstances as a child and that she and her mother had frequent arguments that left her feeling “so much pain and confusion.”

My relationship with my mother has been full of paradoxes and conflicting realities, much like many other areas of my life. In the book, Carey stated, “It’s never been only black-and-white; it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.” “There are many prickly emotions in our relationship, including pride, grief, shame, thankfulness, envy, admiration, and disappointment. My heart is connected to my mother’s through a complex love.

In 2010, Carey recorded a duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus” for the singer’s second Christmas album, and she remained in communication with her mother.
