The Nigeria Customs Service Board (NCSB) has approved a $300 duty-free threshold for imports, effective September 8.

NCS spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, said in Abuja on Sunday that the decision was reached at the board’s 63rd meeting chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.

Known as the “De Minimis” threshold, the policy exempts goods valued at $300 or below from customs duties and taxes. It applies to e-commerce consignments, low-value imports, and passenger baggage, with a maximum of four importations permitted per year.

Maiwada said the measure is designed to boost cross-border trade, ease clearance delays, and align Nigeria with global best practices, including WTO and WCO trade facilitation frameworks. He warned that non-compliance, such as invoice manipulation, would attract sanctions under the NCS Act, 2023.

The NCS has also launched multi-channel helpdesks to guide stakeholders and ensure smooth implementation.

Meanwhile, the board disciplined officers involved in misconduct captured on viral videos, approving the demotion of two officers and reinstating two others.

It also warned personnel against drug abuse and unethical behaviour, stressing its commitment to accountability and integrity.
