The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has clarified that the recent increase in compressed natural gas (CNG) pump prices was driven by private operators and not ordered by the Federal Government.
In a statement issued Thursday in Abuja, PCNGI’s Communications Manager, Matilda Johnson, dismissed reports suggesting government involvement as “false and misleading.”
She stressed that no subsidy removal or policy directive had been issued, adding that CNG remains a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol and diesel in line with President Bola Tinubu’s clean energy agenda.
According to her, some private marketers recently raised pump prices from ₦230 to about ₦380 per Standard Cubic Metre (SCM) without government input.
She noted that pricing is regulated by the appropriate agencies, while the government’s focus is on expanding CNG adoption nationwide.
Johnson further revealed that the sector has already attracted close to $1 billion in private investment, underscoring growing confidence in Nigeria’s CNG market.
