The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, has reiterated the government’s commitment to making healthcare services and commodities freely accessible to citizens across the state.

Dr. Yusuf made this known during a two-day technical engagement meeting with Ward Development Committees (WDCs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on the selection of family planning role models in Kano communities.

The meeting, which held in Kaduna on Friday and Saturday, brought together key stakeholders to strengthen grassroots participation in advancing reproductive health and community health initiatives.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner stressed that critical services such as immunization remain completely free of charge in all facilities across Kano.

He urged residents to take advantage of the program and ensure that no child is left unimmunized.

“Immunization in Kano is entirely free, and I want our people to understand that nobody should collect a single kobo for it.

“Every child has the right to be protected against preventable diseases, and the government will not compromise on that,” Dr. Yusuf said.

He also noted that insecticide-treated mosquito nets were recently distributed to households at no cost, warning that the nets must never be commercialized.

He added: “If anyone finds these nets being sold in markets or shops, please report immediately.

“We will take punitive measures against those responsible. These commodities are meant to save lives, not to be sold for profit.”

On family planning (FP), Dr. Yusuf acknowledged that while the commodities are free, some clients have been paying little stipends.

He assured participants that the state government is working to eliminate these charges completely.

“Family planning commodities are free. However, we are aware that in some cases, a token is being collected. The government is doing everything possible to waive even that little cost so that it becomes 100 percent free,” he explained.

The Commissioner further disclosed that maternal delivery kits for pregnant women are still available in the state. He added that the government plans to scale up distribution across all 44 local government areas in Kano to encourage safe delivery practices.

“Every pregnant woman deserves to deliver safely, and with these kits, we are reducing risks and ensuring mothers have the essentials they need. Soon, these kits will reach every local government in Kano State,” he assured.

Dr. Yusuf urged WDCs and CSOs to continue serving as the bridge between the government and communities, ensuring that citizens access the free commodities provided for their health and wellbeing.
