At least 18 people were killed and 24 others injured on Friday when a passenger bus plunged off a bridge into the Oued El Harrach stream east of Algiers.

The accident occurred at about 5:45 p.m. in El Harrach district. Emergency services deployed 25 ambulances, 16 divers, and four rescue boats to the scene, while bystanders waded into the water to help rescue passengers trapped in the partially submerged vehicle.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has declared a national day of mourning, ordering flags to be flown at half-mast and offering condolences to the victims’ families.

Two of the injured remain in critical condition. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
