The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a fresh flood alert, warning of high to very high flood risks across 198 Local Government Areas in 32 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The alert was issued by the agency’s Director General, Mr. Umar Ibrahim, on Thursday.

According to the alert (Ref No: 32-25-003-06) signed by NIHSA Director General, Mr. Umar Ibrahim, the forecast period spans from August 7 to August 21. The warning comes amid rising river levels and persistent rainfall across the country.

NIHSA cautioned that over 100 communities and several major transportation routes could face severe disruptions during this period.

States projected to be affected include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.

In total, 832 communities fall within the projected flood impact zone.

“Possible disruption of major transportation routes is anticipated,” the agency noted, referencing data from its colour-coded flood risk map.

NIHSA urged emergency management agencies to activate their response protocols immediately and advised communities in flood-prone areas to prepare evacuation plans.

The agency also encouraged the public to monitor its weekly forecasts and stay updated through the NIHSA flood dashboard and official social media platforms.

This alert forms part of NIHSA’s broader effort to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding, which continues to displace thousands and destroy infrastructure each year.
