Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs is set to collaborate with the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative to intensify efforts in the fight against drug abuse, particularly through public enlightenment.

The Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, made this known while receiving the Kano State Commander of WADA in his office.

The Commissioner stated that the state government is working tirelessly to address the menace of drug abuse, especially through the establishment of a Safe Corridor where repentant gang leaders and their followers are being rehabilitated to become productive members of society.

Comrade Waiya, who has been appointed as an Ambassador by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has spent over 13 years actively involved in the campaign against drug abuse. He has collaborated with various organizations, including the NDLEA, to combat the scourge.

He further pledged that the ministry would support and work with WADA to enlighten the public on the dangers of drug abuse.

Earlier, the Kano State Commander of WADA, Umar Haruna Abdullahi, said they were at the ministry to seek collaboration in raising public awareness on the harmful effects of drug abuse in society. He highlighted some of the challenges facing the agency, including the lack of office accommodation and operational vehicles, which are hindering effective service delivery.

The Commander also noted that WADA is working closely with security agencies and the NDLEA. Each ward in the state, he said, has a unit commander, a surveillance officer, and a guidance and counseling officer to ensure effective grassroots operations.

In a related development, the Commissioner also received the Zonal Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), Ibrahim Abdul Danladi, who was on a courtesy visit to introduce the zonal office and brief him on its activities.

Danladi expressed the corporation’s desire to partner with the ministry in organizing training for Information Officers and establishing a Training Institute in the state.

He explained that this would enable residents of Kano to benefit from film and media training without having to travel to the Nigerian Film Institute in Jos.

In response, Comrade Waiya assured the NFC of the ministry’s willingness to collaborate, particularly in the training of Information Officers and in the production of documentaries that showcase the achievements of the present administration.
