Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he is representing Nigeria at the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit, holding from July 27 to 29, 2025.
The high-level summit will convene global leaders to assess progress since the 2021 inaugural event and accelerate efforts towards building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems. The event also focuses on transforming the coffee value chain and enhancing global food security.
A statement from Shettima’s spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, noted that the Vice President will participate in various meetings and side events, including a ministerial roundtable on public finance, trade, and responsible investment.
Other activities include field trips, networking sessions, and discussions showcasing real-world solutions and partnerships in food systems transformation.
Shettima, who previously outlined Nigeria’s objectives at the summit, said the country aims to position itself as a leading voice in African food system reforms, strengthen international partnerships that align with national priorities, and promote a private sector-driven approach to transforming food systems across the continent.
The summit is being co-organised by the United Nations, alongside the governments of Ethiopia and Italy. Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria upon conclusion of the summit.
