Wales’ hopes of qualifying for Euro 2025 are all but over following a heavy 4-1 loss to France in St Gallen.
France struck early, with Clara Mateo volleying home in the 7th minute after Wales failed to clear their third successive corner. Wales quickly responded through Jess Fishlock, who converted from close range after Ceri Holland beat the offside trap and squared the ball. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was awarded following a VAR review.
Rhian Wilkinson’s side were competitive throughout the first half, showing composure and energy, but a late challenge by Holland on Mateo gifted France a penalty just before the break. Kadidiatou Diani converted from the spot, with Wales keeper Safia Middleton-Patel nearly keeping it out.
A costly mistake by Middleton-Patel early in the second half handed France a third goal. The 20-year-old hesitated with the ball at her feet, allowing Mateo to dispossess her and set up Amel Majri for a precise finish. Grace Geyoro added a fourth for France in the 63rd minute, despite several solid saves from Middleton-Patel to limit the damage.
The defeat leaves Wales needing a miracle to qualify. They must beat reigning champions England by four goals and hope France defeat the Netherlands in the final group matches. France, now with nine consecutive wins, need just a point against the Dutch to top Group D.
Despite the loss, Wales showed promise. Fishlock’s goal was a standout moment, and the team matched France for large parts of the game. Middleton-Patel, earning only her fifth cap, had a mixed performance—making impressive saves but also contributing to two goals against her side.
Wales have never beaten a top-10 ranked team and were drawn into a challenging group. The loss to France now leaves their qualification hopes hanging by the thinnest of threads.
