President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded the Nigerian Army for its unwavering commitment to national unity, security, and sovereignty, describing it as the “unbreakable spine” of the nation over the past 162 years.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu delivered the commendation on Sunday at the grand finale of the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) in Kaduna.
He noted that the anniversary is more than a ceremonial event — it is a solemn moment to reflect on the sacrifices and contributions of the Army in protecting the country’s unity and peace.
“This is a time of reflection, remembrance, and deep appreciation,” Tinubu stated. “For 162 years, the Nigerian Army has stood firm as the backbone of our sovereignty.”
Citing the Army’s critical role in ending the Nigerian Civil War, the President recalled the famous words of former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon — “No victor, no vanquished” — as a testament to the Army’s dedication to national unity.
He praised the Army’s continued efforts at home and abroad, stating that the institution does not raise its flag for conquest or power, but for peace and principle.
“We honour the fallen and the living who wear the uniform with pride and resolve. You are the sentinels of our democracy,” Tinubu said.
Backing this year’s NADCEL theme — “Developing the Soldier-Based Concept: A Priority for Nigerian Army’s Transformational Drive” — Tinubu emphasized the importance of soldier welfare and morale in national defense.
“You can’t build a great army without building strong soldiers. Their well-being, training, and sense of purpose are foundational to our security,” he said.
He also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for reforms centered on troop welfare and modernization.
Acknowledging the persistent threats of terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and separatism, Tinubu stressed the need for a united and determined national response.
“These threats do not ask about tribe or religion; they target us all. Our response must be unified and resolute. To our soldiers, I say: the time to rise is now — with full presidential support and the trust of the Nigerian people,” he declared.
He paid tribute to fallen heroes and extended heartfelt condolences to their families, assuring them that the nation would forever honor their sacrifice.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing the capacity of the Armed Forces through investments in equipment, intelligence, and personnel.
He praised the ongoing synergy between the Army, Navy, Air Force, and other security agencies in addressing complex security challenges.
Calling on all citizens to play a role in securing Nigeria, Tinubu said: “We have no other country but Nigeria. Nation-building is not for the military alone — it is the responsibility of every citizen.”
He concluded with a rousing tribute to the Nigerian Army: “You are the guardians of our nationhood and the shield of our democracy. Long live the Nigerian Army. Long live the Armed Forces. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
