The Ukomu Igala Organization (UIO) Worldwide has called for an urgent, independent, and transparent investigation into the alleged assault and continued detention of Mallam Abdulwahab Tijani, popularly known as Tony-Tony.
The organization, in a statement issued on Thursday by its National Leader, Maj. Gen. James A. Ataguba (rtd), said it remained committed to pursuing justice through lawful, peaceful and constitutional means while protecting the interests of the Igala people.
UIO said it had formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) over reports that Tijani was allegedly physically assaulted during his arrest and remained detained at the Koton-Karfi Correctional Facility without trial.
It expressed particular concern over reports that Tijani sustained injuries to his head and face during his arrest, allegedly by local vigilante operatives acting on the orders of the Chairman of Ankpa Local Government Council.
The organization urged the relevant authorities to ascertain his current condition and whereabouts, ensure his safety, and provide medical attention where necessary.
UIO also demanded that anyone found culpable of unlawful conduct during the arrest be held accountable, stressing that any allegation of criminal wrongdoing against Tijani should be investigated in accordance with due process.
Ukomu Igala said it had also engaged the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development over concerns surrounding the impact of mining activities on communities in Kogi East.
It called for a stakeholders’ dialogue involving government authorities, mining operators, host communities, and other relevant stakeholders to address concerns about public health and safety, environmental protection, road damage, community development, and responsible mining practices.
UIO maintained that mineral exploitation in Kogi East must be a “win-win” arrangement, with host communities benefiting from the natural resources extracted from their land.
It called for stricter enforcement of environmental, safety and community-development standards, warning that host communities should not be left with unsafe mining sites, damaged infrastructure, environmental degradation and diminished livelihoods.
The organization also appealed to the Igala people in Nigeria and the diaspora to remain calm, united and cooperative with the authorities while it pursues the issues through lawful channels.
“Protect our people. Enforce the law. Uphold due process. Investigate allegations transparently. And ensure that justice prevails,” the organization said.
UIO reaffirmed its commitment to justice, peace, unity and progress, as well as the responsible exploitation of natural resources in Igala land.
