Sokoto Vaccinates 95 Percent of Livestock Against Anthrax – Official

The Sokoto State Ministry of Animal Health and Fishery Development has said that it had successfully vaccinated 95 Percent of livestock in the state.

This was disclosed by Dr. Nasiru Abdulrahaman, the Director of Veterinary Services of the ministry in an interview with newsmen on the state’s preparedness against the possible spread of anthrax disease from neighboring Zamfara State where two cases were said to have been confirmed.

Dr. Abdulrahaman explained that approximately a week ago, the Federal Government issued an alert regarding outbreaks of avian influenza in Kano State and anthrax in Zamfara State.

In response, the Sokoto State government took swift action. The alert was promptly forwarded to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, and the State Rapid Response Team was re-energized to effectively manage any possible outbreak.

“We acted swiftly, Dr. Abdulrahaman said while disclosing that. “The State Rapid Response Team, which was already on standby is fully prepared to handle any kind of unforeseen outbreak of livestock disease.

“Sequel to the alert by the federal government Sokoto state has previously experienced an anthrax outbreak in Danchadi village, located in Bodinga Local Government Area, and in response to that, the Federal Government provided the state with 800,000 doses of anthrax vaccine.

“Vaccination against the disease commenced some months ago and it’s still ongoing.

“We are using GPS cameras to monitor and tracked vaccinators to ensure that, the exercise covers all the 23 LGAs of the state.

 “This technology helps us ensure that vaccinations are being carried out at the correct locations. Based on our efforts so far, over 95 percent of the livestock in the State have been vaccinated against various diseases including the dreaded Anthrax.

“With a team of approximately 200 veterinary doctors, Sokoto State ensures rigorous health and safety protocols for both livestock and meat products. Some veterinary doctors are stationed at abattoirs across the state to perform pre-and post-slaughter tests, certifying that meat is safe for human consumption.”

Additionally, the state is home to over 270 registered poultry farms, all of which are regularly monitored to ensure the safety and quality of their Birds.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Abubakar Yabo of Animal Health, called on the people of the state to support government efforts to improve healthy animals.

 Yabo emphasized the importance of vaccination and the use of improved livestock species to enhance livestock production.

He encouraged cattle herders and breeders to take advantage of free artificial insemination services provided by the ministry.

He noted that only 250 out of 1,000 doses of dairy and beef semen donated by the Indonesian government have been used so far while urging cattle owners to come forward for the insemination as the entire process is free of charge.

According to him, Sokoto State is taking proactive measures to safeguard the health of its livestock and ensure the safety of meat consumed in the state.

“Our veterinary inspectors conduct premortem and postmortem on all Animals brought at the state central Abatoir and other slaughterhouses to ensure that meat sold to the public is safe for human consumption”. Yabo stated.

Stallion Times reports that the federal government through the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development alerted citizens on the outbreak of a dreaded Anthrax disease in Zamfara state.

In the alert, the FG warned citizens to be watchful of higher fever, coughing, vomiting, nausea, and diarrhoea symptoms which could be a result of contact with the infected animals.

The Alert which served as a statement, was signed by the Director, Information and Public Relations Department, Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Ben Bem Goong.

The Alert read;

“The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development wishes to officially notify the public of a confirmed outbreak of Anthrax in a farm in Zamfara State.
