Sokoto NUT Elects New Leadership

The Sokoto State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has elected a new 13-member executive committee during its 8th Quadrennial State Conference of Delegates, held on Monday at the Federal Government College, Sokoto.

Themed “Impact of Fuel Subsidy Removal on Education Development,” the conference brought together primary and secondary school teachers from across the state’s local government areas.

Murtala Muhammad Sokoto, Principal of Science Teachers College, emerged as the new State Chairman of the union, alongside other executive members elected through a consensus process following the formal dissolution of the outgoing leadership.

In his acceptance speech, Malam Murtala Muhammad Sokoto expressed gratitude to union members for their trust and pledged to prioritize the welfare of teachers and the advancement of education across Sokoto State.

Speaking at the event, Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, represented by the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Umar Na Gwari Tambuwal, reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers. He announced plans to train 8,000 teachers and review issues such as promotions, headmaster, and hardship allowances.

State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Ahmad Ladan Ala, urged teachers to remain committed to their duties, noting the government’s efforts to uplift morale through the construction and renovation of schools.

Other speakers at the conference commended the government for implementing the new N70,000 minimum wage for teachers and praised the outgoing NUT leadership for its achievements.

The newly elected executives will serve a four-year term.
