In a move to tackle electricity challenges and boost economic productivity, the Sokoto State Government has launched the distribution of solar-powered electronic equipment to over 5,000 small scale businesses across the state.
The initiative was aimed at promoting sustainable energy and economic empowerment, marks a significant milestone in the state’s journey toward energy independence.
The distribution, which kicked off on Friday in Sokoto North and Sokoto South local government areas, is part of the second year anniversary celebration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration.
It targets all 23 local government areas, demonstrating the government’s commitment to equitable development and inclusive growth.
The State Commissioner for Energy and Petroleum Resources Hon. Sanusi Ibrahim Danfulani at the event stated that, the program is designed to enhance access to renewable energy and alleviate the persistent challenges posed by erratic power supply.
The commissioner also in a statement issued by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Nasir Abubakar Kiri, Hon. Danfulani emphasized that solar energy offers a dependable and eco-friendly alternative that can significantly improve the operational capacity of local businesses.
He noted that this project aligns with Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s nine point agenda, which includes innovation in energy provision and strategic investment in small enterprises as a path to economic revitalization.
The Commissioner assured that the distribution will expand to all corners of Sokoto State, underlining its role in transforming business landscapes and supporting grassroots economic growth.
Also addressing participants, the Director of Renewable Energy at the Ministry, Muhammad Garba, advised beneficiaries to make efficient use of the solar equipment and called on residents to embrace renewable energy as a viable solution for domestic and commercial power needs.
Garba reiterated that this initiative reaffirms the state government’s dedication to exploring alternative energy sources, not only to bridge power supply gaps but also to position Sokoto as a pioneer in renewable energy adoption.
The distribution process was carefully organized, with a shop-to-shop exercise conducted to ensure transparency and fairness.
Only verified and qualified businesses received the equipment, reinforcing public trust in the government’s delivery mechanisms.
Beneficiaries of the initiative expressed their gratitude to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, praising his administration for implementing practical, transformative programs that directly impact their livelihoods and business growth.
Each solar kit distributed includes essential components tailored to support the energy needs of small enterprises solar panels, standing fans, stabilizers, solar powered valves, and other accessories designed for off-grid operations.
In a related and equally significant development, Governor Ahmed Aliyu signed into law the 2024 Electricity Act.
The law establishes the Sokoto State Electricity Regulatory Commission, granting the state greater autonomy in managing and developing its electricity infrastructure in alignment with the 2023 national electricity legislation.
