Plateau State Government has procured about 500 truckloads of fertilizer for the 2026 farming season and reduced the price of a 50kg bag to N20,000, in a major intervention aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, enhancing farmers’ incomes and strengthening food security across the state.

The subsidized rate represents a significant drop from the prevailing market price of between N50,000 and N53,000 per bag.

A statement issued on Monday by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Dr. Gyang Bere, said Governor Caleb Mutfwang approved the procurement as part of his administration’s commitment to agricultural transformation, economic empowerment of farmers and sustainable food production.

According to the statement, although the official launch of the 2026 Fertilizer Subsidy Program is scheduled for July 10, the governor has directed the immediate commencement of sales to enable farmers to access the commodity during the ongoing planting season.

It explained that the subsidy program is designed to provide farmers with timely access to quality farm inputs at affordable rates, reduce production costs, and encourage increased agricultural output.

Governor Mutfwang said the fertilizer would be distributed across the state’s 17 local government areas, stressing that the initiative is targeted at easing the burden of rising farming costs while improving productivity and food availability.

He described agriculture as a cornerstone of his administration’s development agenda and a key driver of economic growth, employment generation and rural development.

The Governor noted that the subsidy was introduced in response to farmers’ concerns over the escalating cost of agricultural inputs and reflects the government’s resolve to make farming more productive, profitable and sustainable.

Mutfwang added that the intervention aligns with the agricultural objectives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and complements ongoing efforts to cushion economic challenges while increasing food production nationwide.

Expressing optimism about the program’s impact, the governor said it would lower production costs, improve crop yields, increase farmers’ earnings and advance Plateau State’s quest for food sufficiency and sustainable agricultural development.

The Governor urged farmers across the state to take full advantage of the initiative, assuring them of his administration’s continued support through policies and programs aimed at improving rural livelihoods and positioning Plateau as a leading agricultural and agribusiness hub in Nigeria.
