Kano Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Rural Development

Kano State Deputy Governor, Murtala Sule Garo, has reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to promoting sustainable rural and community development through stronger partnerships with key stakeholders.

The Deputy Governor made this known on Tuesday while representing the Governor at the Kano State Rural and Sustainable Community Development Summit (RUSCODS 2026) held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.

Speaking on the theme, “The Pathway for Partnership Towards Sustainable Rural and Community Development in Kano State,” Garo said Governor Yusuf appreciated the organisers for convening the summit and commended the State Ministry of Rural and Community Development for bringing together critical stakeholders to discuss on future of rural communities.

He noted that the prosperity of Kano State is closely linked to the strength and productivity of its rural communities, where Agriculture, commerce and small-scale businesses remain major sources of livelihood.

The Deputy Governor said the present administration is determined to ensure that no community is left behind, stressing that government alone cannot deliver sustainable development, saying, “Lasting progress depends on constructive collaboration among all those who share a genuine interest in the advancement of our communities” he said.

Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo while acknowledging challenges faced by many rural communities, he said addressing these issues requires stronger cooperation among government, development partners, financial institutions, civil society, traditional institutions and local communities.

He highlighted the government’s investments in rural roads, portable water, electrification, healthcare, education, Agriculture, youth empowerment and climate-smart initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding economic opportunities across the state.

Calling for greater collaboration, Garo urged development partners, the private sector and community leaders to align their interventions with the needs of rural communities.

He also encouraged participants to make practical recommendations, adding, “We shall continue to welcome every genuine partnership that contributes to the welfare of our people and the progress of our State.”

Speaking earlier, Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam revealed that the Kano State Integrated Rural and Sustainable Community Development Plan (2026–2030) is designed to change that narrative.

“It provides a comprehensive five-year framework that places rural communities at the centre of development planning” he shared.

The Commissioner further hinted that the plan is built on community-driven, data-based evidence to ensure that projects, policies, and investments are aligned with the real needs of the people while promoting transparency, accountability, and measurable results.

Also speaking the Emir of Karaye, His Royal Highness Alh. Muhammad Muhammad Maharaz who spoke on behalf of the Emirs of Kano, Rano and Gaya explained that the summit provides us with an opportunity to reflect deeply on the plight and living conditions of our rural communities.

“It is a platform to unite our ideas and develop practical solutions to improve the lives of our rural population” the Emir Stated

He noted that there is the need to critically examine factors that can accelerate rural development both traditional and modern approaches with a practical and sustainable strategies that will have a lasting impact.

Highlights of the summit includes goodwill messages from distinguished guests, unveiling of the Kano State Integrated Rural and Sustainable Community Development Plan (2026–2030), presentation of awards and certificates of honour as well as a group photograph.
