The Director-General (DG) of the Kano State Public Debt Management Office (DMO), Dr. Hamisu Sadi Ali, has called for stronger fiscal discipline, improved revenue generation, and more responsible debt management as key steps toward ensuring the state’s long-term economic sustainability.

He made the call on Saturday while delivering his welcome address at the opening of a two-day workshop on the development of the Kano State Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) and Medium-Term Debt Management Strategy (MTDS) for the 2025/2026 period, held at B. Nakowa Modern Guest Lodge in Dutse, Jigawa State.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders, including the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, the Chairman of the Kano Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, members of the Kano State House of Assembly, permanent secretaries, development partners, resource persons, and officials from various ministries, departments, and agencies, and civil society organizations.

Welcoming participants, Dr. Ali described the engagement as a critical milestone in strengthening Kano State’s fiscal sustainability framework and promoting prudent debt management practices.

He noted that while public debt remains an important tool for financing infrastructure and development projects, its effectiveness depends on sound fiscal policies, strong institutions, and sustainable revenue streams.

According to him, the workshop would focus on key thematic areas, including debt sustainability, fiscal risks, debt management strategies, public financial management reforms, transparency and accountability, revenue mobilization, and institutional coordination.

He explained that the outcomes of the deliberations would provide the technical foundation for a robust and realistic Debt Sustainability Analysis and Medium-Term Debt Management Strategy capable of supporting the state’s development goals while maintaining fiscal stability.

The DG Debt Management Office also commended the Kano Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) for its efforts in strengthening internally generated revenue, stressing that a solid revenue base is essential for sustainable debt management.

“Sustainable debt management cannot be achieved without a strong and expanding revenue base,” he said, adding that the relationship between internally generated revenue and debt sustainability remains central to the state’s fiscal future.

He expressed confidence that the expertise of resource persons and the experience of participants would produce practical recommendations to improve debt management, strengthen fiscal resilience, and support sustainable economic growth.

Dr. Ali urged participants to actively engage in discussions, share insights, and contribute meaningful recommendations that would enhance the state’s debt management framework.

He further expressed optimism that the workshop would yield actionable strategies to reinforce transparency, accountability, and responsible borrowing, ultimately advancing Kano State’s vision of sustainable economic development and financial stability.
