The Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, has commissioned a newly constructed modern Police Division (Abuja Type II) in Birniwa Local Government Area of the state.
The commissioning ceremony, held on Tuesday, was attended by the Chairman of Birniwa Local Government Council, Shehu Baba; the District Head of Birniwa; a representative of the Senator representing Jigawa North-East and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs; the Chief Imam of Birniwa; the State Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), as well as members of the Jigawa State Police Command Management Team.
Also present were the Area Commander, Hadejia; Commanding Officer, 35 PMF Dutse; heads of sister security agencies, community representatives and other stakeholders from Birniwa and neighbouring communities.
SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the Command’s spokesperson, in a statement, said the event provided an opportunity for stakeholders to deliver goodwill messages and discuss policing, security and the importance of sustained collaboration between the police and the communities they serve.
Before the goodwill messages, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Birniwa Division presented a briefing on the history and operations of the division, highlighting its achievements in crime fighting, community engagement initiatives, prevailing security challenges and areas requiring further support.
Speaking at the ceremony, CP Murtala commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, Senator Amb. Ahmed Abdulhamid Malam Madori, the Chairman of Birniwa Local Government Council, community leaders and other stakeholders who contributed to the construction of the facility.
He said the provision of a modern and functional police facility would improve the working environment of police personnel and strengthen the Command’s capacity to respond promptly and professionally to security threats in Birniwa and adjoining communities.
The commissioner said the Command’s policing strategy remained anchored on intelligence-led policing, community partnership, proactive crime prevention, rapid response, professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights.
He also urged personnel of the newly commissioned division to make the facility a centre of service to humanity, charging them to discharge their duties with discipline, dedication, integrity, courage and professionalism.
CP Murtala called on traditional and religious leaders, community leaders, youth groups, vigilante organisations and other stakeholders to continue supporting the police by providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing crimes and apprehending suspected criminals.
The commissioner and his entourage also paid a condolence visit to the family of a police corporal who was killed while responding to a distress call during an armed robbery incident in Hadejia.
Murtala expressed the Command’s sympathy to the bereaved family, describing the officer’s death as a painful reminder of the risks faced by police personnel in the course of protecting lives and property.
He assured the family that the officer’s sacrifice would not be forgotten and conveyed the condolences and solidarity of the Inspector-General of Police and the entire Nigeria Police Force.
The commissioner subsequently inspected the scene of the armed robbery in Hadejia, where he assessed the circumstances surrounding the incident and received operational briefings from officers on the ground.
He directed the DPO of Hadejia ‘A’ Division and the Command’s investigative units to intensify efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the incident and ensure that they are brought to justice.
He also ordered enhanced intelligence gathering, community engagement and proactive patrols across Hadejia and other identified security flashpoints in the state.
The commissioner assured residents of Birniwa, Hadejia and the people of Jigawa State that the Police Command remained committed to protecting lives and property, preventing and detecting crime, maintaining public order and ensuring that criminals have no safe haven in the state.
