Governor Hyacinth Alia has signed into law the Benue State Electricity Law, 2026, a landmark legislation aimed at transforming the power sector and driving economic development across the state.

The signing ceremony took place on Monday at the Old Banquet Hall of the Government House in Makurdi, where the governor formally assented to the law.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, in a statement, said the new legislation establishes a legal framework for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within Benue State, paving the way for improved access to reliable and stable power supply for households, businesses, schools, hospitals, and other critical institutions.

According to Governor Alia, the law is expected to stimulate economic growth by attracting investors, encouraging industrial expansion, and creating employment opportunities, particularly for young people.

He noted that improved electricity supply would significantly reduce the cost of doing business, as enterprises would spend less on generators, fuel, and alternative energy sources.

This, he said, would lower production costs, boost profitability, and enhance the competitiveness of locally produced goods.

The law also contains provisions aimed at protecting electricity consumers through fair billing practices, improved service delivery, prompt resolution of complaints, and greater accountability by service providers.

In addition, the legislation is expected to accelerate rural electrification efforts by extending power infrastructure to underserved communities.

This development is anticipated to improve healthcare delivery, educational services, agricultural processing, security, and overall living standards in rural areas.

Speaking on the significance of the law, Governor Alia described it as a major step towards ensuring a reliable electricity supply, fostering industrialization, creating jobs, protecting consumers, and enhancing the quality of life of residents.

The administration expressed optimism that implementing the law would position Benue State as a hub for sustainable economic growth and investment in the power sector.
