The Fiscal Discipline and Development Advocacy Center (FIDAC) has joined Nigerians at home and abroad in commemorating the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary, while urging leaders to uphold the values and sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Executive Director of FIDAC, Dr. Abdussalam Muhammad Kani, said Nigeria’s independence in 1960 was achieved through resilience, vision, and unity, but lamented that since the return to democracy in 1999, successive governments have failed to live up to those ideals.

“Instead of progress, Nigerians have endured waves of economic hardship, insecurity, and governance failures that betray the dreams of those who fought for our freedom,” Dr. Kani said.

According to him, despite these challenges, FIDAC noted that Nigeria has continued to record silent but notable achievements, pointing to the global success of its youth, the growth of the creative industry, and the resilience of its citizens as sources of national pride.

He stressed that Nigeria’s best years still lie ahead if leaders embrace sincerity, patriotism, and selfless service.

Dr. Kani then called for a renewed commitment to good governance, accountability, and national unity.

“As we mark this Independence Day, we pray for unity, peace, prosperity, and divine wisdom for our leaders to steer the nation aright.

Posterity will judge them for their actions and inactions,” he said, adding that it is not too late for those in authority to put Nigeria first and restore the dignity and pride of the country.
