In a major stride towards transforming Nigeria’s healthcare system, the Federal Government has on Wednesday commissioned 16 pivotal projects at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital (FNPH) Kware in Sokoto State, under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziak Salako, emphasized that the projects are part of the administration’s strategic vision to strengthen the nation’s health institutions.

He highlighted the government’s commitment to equipping hospitals with the necessary infrastructure, human resources, funding, and support to improve service delivery nationwide.

“It is commendable that the management of FNPH Kware has made judicious use of allocated government resources. I am pleased to witness the completion of 16 impactful projects,” Dr. Salako stated.

The newly inaugurated projects include a Molecular Laboratory, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Regional Women and Children Drug Dependency Treatment Centre, Accident and Emergency Centre, Multipurpose Students’ Hostel, School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing, ICT Centre and Hall, and Alternative Power Supply System, among others.

“These projects will undoubtedly enhance patient care and contribute to better health outcomes,” he noted.

Dr. Salako further revealed that the Federal Government has delivered over 500 key infrastructural projects and supplied advanced medical equipment to tertiary health institutions across the country.

He stressed that healthcare delivery extends beyond infrastructure, pointing to the recent employment of over 15,000 health workers and ongoing professional development initiatives.

“As part of the Nigeria Digital Health Initiative, we are digitizing service delivery to enhance efficiency, transparency, quality of care, and accountability,” he added.

To address persistent power challenges in the health sector, Dr. Salako announced plans for a National Dialogue on Power in the Health Sector.

The government is implementing alternative energy solutions, particularly solar, to improve energy reliability in health facilities.

In addition, the government has approved a Social Action Fund to empower 109 communities to implement locally driven, health-promoting projects, addressing social determinants of health.

“We are also launching the Renewed Hope Health Connect, an intervention targeting one million vulnerable Nigerians with fully funded medical, surgical, ophthalmological, and audiological services,” the minister announced.

On mental health, Dr. Salako affirmed that the Ministry has begun implementing the Nigerian National Mental Health Act, 2023, with a dedicated desk now established. He disclosed plans to create a full-fledged mental health department and outlined steps toward integrating mental health services into primary healthcare, decriminalizing suicide, reducing stigma, and regulating involuntary seclusion.

Also speaking, Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruku Wurno, reiterated the state’s commitment to partnering with FNPH Kware, highlighting how the hospital’s integrated healthcare system will strengthen collaboration and service delivery.

Dr. Wurno commended the hospital’s Medical Director, Prof. Shehu Sale, for his visionary leadership and urged successors to build on the developmental roadmap already laid out.

In his remarks, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese described the hospital’s development as timely and necessary, urging health institution leaders to champion inclusive, people-centered initiatives that ease public suffering and address healthcare needs.

Representing the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, the District Head of Kware, Alhaji Muhammadu Dan’iya, praised Prof. Sale for his foresight, noting that the hospital’s programs have significantly benefited the local population.

Prof. Shehu Sale, in his address, affirmed the hospital’s transformation into a hub for healthcare delivery, training, and research. He highlighted FNPH Kware’s pioneering role in operating a Nursing and Midwifery School alongside a Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing Program, and in training psychiatric consultants.

He commended President Tinubu for his commitment to building an efficient, accessible, affordable, and people-centered healthcare system across Nigeria.
