News Desk

The Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers of Nigeria (FEPSON) says it is targeting production of N1m metric tonns of NPK fertilizer in 2025 as the production and blending capacity of the country has now witnessed significant growth.

President of FEPSON, Abubakar Sadiq Kassim made the disclosure in Abuja on Thursday at the Press conference to highlight the plans of the Association ahead of the wet farming season, while assuring farmers of availability of fertilizer during the forthcoming farming season.

Speaking at the briefing, he said “We want to assure farmers that there will be availability of fertilizer in Nigeria. Nigeria has grown in terms of capacity from 7 blenders to 92 from and 2 to 3 manufacturers of Urea we are delivering 6m metric tonns of Urea and we have become a next exporter of Urea.

“We want to assure Nigerian public of today’s current status. NPK has hovered between 600 and 700 metric tons. We are targeting to producing N1m metric tonnes . We have the products  in the hands of fertilizer blenders and are already on course,” he said

Asked on the concerns around high cost of fertilizer, Kassim stated that “FEPSON’s  two major areas of concern is how to reduce the price of fertilizer to make it affordable to the farmer and the identified route is collaboration with government in providing production and distribution incentives that will further lower the cost,”

He further called for stricter regulations of the sector, adding that “There are 90 registered members of FEPSON. However there are so many unlicensed producers who just go into the market and sell all manner of fertlizer for farmers, thereby making it difficult for licensed members to operate seamlessly,”
