London, United Kingdom– Universal Learning Solutions (ULS) today proudly presented the International Literacy and Learning Leadership Award to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State at a special ceremony held at the historic Stationers’ Hall in the City of London.

The award was accepted on the Governor’s behalf by His Royal Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, in recognition of the governor’s outstanding commitment to transforming education in Kano State.

The award recognises Governor Yusuf’s bold leadership in prioritising education, including his landmark decision to allocate 30% of the state’s budget to education—one of the highest education budget allocations in Nigeria.

This unprecedented investment supports far-reaching reforms designed to improve learning outcomes and expand educational opportunities for every child.

In a deeply moving and inspiring acceptance address, the Emir of Kano paid tribute to Governor Yusuf’s vision and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of the people of Kano through education.

He spoke passionately about the responsibility shared by governments, communities, and organisations to ensure that every child—especially the most disadvantaged—has access to their fundamental right to literacy and quality education.

The Emir also highlighted the enormous potential of Jolly Phonics to help bridge the gap between traditional Qur’anic education and formal schooling for Almajiri children.

He emphasised that many pupils already possess strong Arabic literacy skills and that this foundation should be respected and built upon as they develop English literacy, opening new opportunities while preserving their religious and cultural heritage.

His remarks inspired delegates from across the education sector and reaffirmed the importance of inclusive, evidence-based approaches to literacy that leave no child behind.

Gary Foxcroft, co-founder and CEO of Universal Learning Solutions, said:

“It was an immense honor to welcome His Royal Highness the Emir of Kano to Stationers’ Hall and to recognise the extraordinary leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

“The governor’s commitment to investing in education demonstrates what is possible when political leadership places children and learning at the heart of government. Emir’s vision for ensuring that every child, including Almajiri pupils, has the opportunity to become literate was both powerful and inspiring.”

Universal Learning Solutions reaffirmed its long-term commitment to supporting the Government of Kano State as it continues its ambitious education reform program.

Building on a strong partnership through the implementation of Jolly Phonics, ULS pledged to continue working alongside the state to strengthen literacy outcomes, train teachers and ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The ceremony formed part of the celebrations marking 20 years of Jolly Phonics in Africa, recognising two decades of partnership, innovation, and impact in improving literacy across the continent.
