The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced investigations into a suspected serial fraudster, Stella Ezinne Egotanwa, for allegedly defrauding 21 people of N8.29 million under the pretext of securing employment for them at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu.
The EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Directorate said the 45-year-old businesswoman allegedly collected a total of N8,291,200 from the victims between December 28, 2025, and June 30, 2026, using accounts belonging to different Point of Sale (POS) agents.
According to the commission, Egotanwa was arrested on 30 July 2026, by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State following a complaint from 16 individuals who alleged that she collected N6,193,000 from them after promising to secure jobs at the hospital.
She was subsequently handed over to the EFCC on 26 August 2026, for further investigation.
The commission disclosed that five additional individuals later petitioned against the suspect, alleging that she obtained another N2,098,200 from them under the same employment scheme.
One of the petitioners said she paid Egotanwa N1,050,000 on 28 December 2025, believing the employment opportunity was genuine.
The petitioner, however, said the promised job failed to materialise and that she subsequently experienced difficulties reaching the suspect, who allegedly stopped responding to her calls and messages at certain periods.
The EFCC further disclosed that Egotanwa was already awaiting trial in another similar case involving an alleged employment scam.
The commission said the suspect had admitted committing the alleged offence, adding that she would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The case highlights the risks associated with fraudulent recruitment schemes and the need for job seekers to verify employment offers through official channels before making payments.
