Amnesty International has strongly condemned the killing of five people by suspected political thugs in Kano, describing the incident as a dangerous escalation of violence in the state.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, it said the victims were attacked and killed by armed political mobs, marking what it called one of the most significant surges in political thuggery in recent years.

Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible, including alleged sponsors, are brought to justice.

According to the Amnesty International, a viral video it obtained showed armed thugs moving in a mob, chasing fleeing individuals who were later violently killed. Other footage reportedly captured victims lying in pools of blood in their final moments.

it further alleged that the attackers were seen wearing T-shirts associated with the ruling party and chanting violent slogans. It added that reports indicate supporters of certain politicians had been targeting perceived political opponents.

Amnesty International disclosed that it is currently investigating allegations linking some prominent politicians and government officials in Kano to the sponsorship of the armed groups.

It warned that the incident reflects a growing pattern of political violence in Kano in recent months, noting that such groups appear to operate with impunity, posing a serious threat to the right to life.

The organization called on Nigerian authorities, political actors and parties to uphold the rule of law and ensure the protection of lives and property before, during and after political activities.

Amnesty International also stressed the need to safeguard citizens’ rights to freedom of association and movement, warning that rising political violence is creating a climate of fear and undermining democratic participation in the state.
