Musa Na Allah, Sokoto
Sokoto State Government has approved a comprehensive development package valued at more than N4.5 billion, covering agriculture, healthcare, workers’ welfare, aviation safety and critical infrastructure projects as part of efforts to stimulate economic growth and improve the living conditions of residents.
The approvals were granted at the State Executive Council meeting held on Thursday at the Government House, Sokoto, according to a statement issued by the Director-General of Media and Publicity, Abubakar Bawa.
At the centre of the approvals is a N1.652 billion intervention for the procurement of assorted fertilisers, improved seeds and agrochemicals to support farmers during the 2026 wet season farming cycle.
The government said the initiative would complement agricultural inputs earlier procured by the 23 local government councils and ensure that farmers receive the necessary support at the beginning of the planting season.
The intervention is expected to boost agricultural productivity, strengthen food security and improve the economic fortunes of farming communities across the state.
In a move aimed at enhancing workers’ welfare, the council also approved the procurement of 1,200 Daylong motorcycles worth N1.609 billion for civil servants under a subsidised loan scheme.
The initiative fulfils a promise made by Governor Ahmed Aliyu during the 2026 May Day celebration and is expected to ease transportation challenges facing workers.
The council further approved the upgrading of the Gagi Primary Health Centre to a General Hospital at a cost of N592.1 million, a project expected to expand healthcare access and improve service delivery.
To further strengthen the healthcare sector, approval was granted for the construction of a Primary Health Care Centre in Majemar Korino, Tudun Wada area of Sokoto South Local Government Area at a cost of N143.4 million.
An additional N192.9 million was approved for the construction of an administrative block at the Primary Health Care Centre on Kontagora Road to improve operational efficiency and management.
The council also approved N246.9 million for emergency concrete works, including the rehabilitation of collapsed culverts and drainage channels behind the Rima Radio/Tudun Wada road network.
The project is expected to address persistent flooding concerns and improve environmental resilience in affected communities.
In the aviation sector, the government approved N113.4 million for the installation and maintenance of the Airfield Ground Lighting system at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport.
Officials said the project would enhance flight safety, support night operations and strengthen aviation infrastructure within the state.
The approvals reflect the administration’s commitment to investing in sectors considered critical to economic development, public welfare and sustainable growth.
Government officials expressed confidence that the projects would not only improve service delivery but also create opportunities for economic expansion, increased agricultural output and improved quality of life for residents across Sokoto State.
