Kogi State Government has announced the immediate suspension of the Echane Festival in Ebiraland following security concerns and intelligence reports indicating that activities associated with the event could threaten public peace and safety.
The decision, contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said the move became necessary to prevent a possible breakdown of law and order in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District.
According to the government, while it acknowledges the cultural importance of traditional festivals and their role in preserving the rich heritage of the people, the protection of lives and property remains its foremost responsibility.
The statement noted that Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo directed the immediate suspension of the festival in the interest of maintaining peace, security and public order across the state.
The Governor also instructed all security agencies operating in Kogi State to ensure strict compliance with the directive, warning that any individual or group found organizing, participating in or promoting activities related to the suspended festival would face legal consequences.
The government appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, opinion leaders, youth groups and residents of the affected communities to cooperate with security agencies and support efforts aimed at sustaining peace and stability.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the Kogi State Government said it would continue to take proactive measures to preserve the peace and security for which the state is known.
