Kano State Ministry of Water Resources has signed contracts worth N21.29 billion for the rehabilitation and restoration of critical water supply infrastructure at the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants as part of efforts to improve access to safe and reliable water supply across the state.
The projects were approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf during the State Executive Council meeting held in April 2026, with the administration describing the intervention as a major step toward revitalizing Kano’s water distribution network and addressing longstanding infrastructure challenges.
Under the approved contracts, the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and the restoration of its Raw Water Pump Station were awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited at the cost of N9.9 billion.
Similarly, the rehabilitation of the Challawa Raw Water Pump Station and Water Treatment Plant, alongside the restoration of the Goron Dutse Reservoirs, was awarded to CCECC Nigeria Limited for N11.39 billion.
The contract signing ceremony took place on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, where the Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, signed the agreements alongside representatives of the two construction firms.
Speaking during the ceremony, Dr. Hashim expressed confidence in the technical capacity of the contractors to execute the projects according to approved standards and specifications. He urged the companies to ensure the timely delivery of the projects within the stipulated eight-month completion period.
He described the rehabilitation of the two strategic water treatment plants as a landmark achievement in the state government’s efforts to restore critical public infrastructure, strengthen water production and distribution systems, and improve access to potable water for millions of residents.
According to him, the projects are expected to significantly improve the efficiency and sustainability of water supply services, particularly in metropolitan Kano and surrounding communities that rely heavily on the affected facilities.
Representatives of the two firms formally received their award letters at the event and assured the ministry of their readiness to complete the projects on schedule, or ahead of schedule, while maintaining quality standards.
The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to strict supervision and monitoring of the projects to ensure transparency, accountability, and successful execution for the benefit of Kano residents.
