What began as a heated exchange between fans has now spiralled into a full-blown public fight between Grammy-winning singer Wizkid and Afrobeat activist Seun Kuti, with both men trading words online in a clash that has shaken Nigeria’s music space.

The confrontation erupted after Seun Kuti spent several days addressing claims by Wizkid fans that the superstar had surpassed his late father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, in influence and impact.

In a series of videos, Seun strongly rejected the comparison, insisting that Fela’s legacy as a revolutionary voice, cultural icon and political activist could not be reduced to streaming numbers, awards or global chart success.

Seun, visibly angry in some clips, accused certain fans of rewriting history and disrespecting the sacrifices Fela made during Nigeria’s military era.

He stressed that his father was beaten, jailed and persecuted for speaking truth to power, adding that activism and cultural resistance should not be compared to commercial success.

The situation escalated dramatically on January 20, 2026, when Wizkid responded publicly for the first time. In a now-viral post, Wizkid dismissed Seun outright, declaring that he was “bigger” and mocking the continued references to Fela’s legacy.

Screenshots and screen recordings of the post spread rapidly across X and Instagram before the singer deleted or restricted further comments.

Wizkid also reposted a video shared by Fela’s daughter, Motunrayo, in which she appeared to ridicule Seun and question his constant invocation of their father’s name in online arguments.

The repost was seen by many as Wizkid openly taking sides within the Kuti family, further inflaming the situation.

Following Wizkid’s response, Seun Kuti released additional videos, accusing the singer of arrogance and historical ignorance.

He stated that he was not fighting Wizkid personally but defending the truth about Fela’s contribution to African identity and global Black consciousness. Seun also criticised celebrity culture, arguing that fame without responsibility should not be celebrated over sacrifice and struggle.
