Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Tuesday officially commissioned the State’s Neighbourhood Watch Corps during a colourful passing-out parade held on Tuesday at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, in a statement, said the newly established corps comprises 2,000 operatives deployed across the 44 local government areas of the state, including 130 females and 1,870 males, selected to strengthen grassroots security and intelligence gathering.

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf announced that the corps would be adequately equipped to confront major criminal activities, including banditry, drug abuse, thuggery, and other threats to public safety in both urban and rural communities.

As part of the commissioning exercise, the governor also rolled out 88 Hilux operational vehicles and 440 motorcycles to ensure effective patrol, rapid response, and wider coverage by the Neighbourhood Watch operatives.

Addressing the corps members, Governor Yusuf charged them to remain disciplined, honest, and committed to their duties, reminding them that they were recruited to serve and protect their immediate communities.

He stressed that the security of Kano State remains a top priority of his administration, noting that peace and stability are critical to economic growth, education, and overall social development.

The governor further assured that his administration would continue to invest in security infrastructure, personnel welfare, and strategic collaboration with conventional security agencies to ensure a safer Kano State.

In his remarks, Katsina State Governor, Malam Umar Dikko Radda, commended the initiative and pledged to partner with Kano State in addressing criminal activities, particularly in border communities most affected by cross-border crimes.

Governor Radda emphasized that sustained inter-state cooperation is essential to curbing insecurity in the North-West and ensuring lasting peace for residents of the region.

The event was attended by former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; deputy governors of Zamfara, Jigawa, and Sokoto states; the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sunusi II and Chairman Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence Sen. Yahaya Abdullahi.

Others include top government officials, traditional rulers, security chiefs, and other stakeholders from within and outside the state.
