The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, has organized a one-day capacity-building workshop for media practitioners as part of activities marking its 2025 Press Week.

The training, held on Sunday at the State Press Centre, is one of several programmes lined up for the weeklong celebration aimed at strengthening professionalism in the media industry.

In his welcome address, the State Council Chairman, Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi, stated that the workshop was designed to refresh and enhance the capacity of journalists, particularly in issues related to media law, ethics, and professional conduct.

He explained that the participants were carefully selected from various media organizations across the state, reflecting both conventional and digital media platforms.

Comrade Dederi urged the beneficiaries to apply the knowledge gained to improve the quality of journalism practice in Kano and Nigeria as a whole.

He commended the Kano State Government for its continuous support of the council and its activities.

Delivering a paper on Safety Tips in Journalism, veteran journalist and Chief Press Secretary to the Kano State Governor, Mustafa Muhammad, spoke extensively on the importance of situational awareness, risk assessment, and self-protection for journalists covering conflict-prone or hostile environments.

He emphasized that no story is worth a journalist’s life and encouraged practitioners to prioritize personal safety while on duty.

Another resource person, Adamu Salisu of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Kano Office, lectured participants on the Code of Ethics for Nigerian Journalists, highlighting key principles such as accuracy, fairness, balance, and responsibility.

Veteran broadcaster Amina Yahaya Deen also presented a paper on Tools for Effective Translation, underscoring the importance of clarity, cultural context, and linguistic competence in broadcasting and news writing.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Managing Director of Kano State Radio Corporation, Adamu Abubakar Rano, and the Managing Director of HIKIMA Radio, Muhammad Musa Muhammad (Inya), applauded the NUJ for sustaining capacity-building initiatives that enhance professional standards.

A total of fifty journalists drawn from print, broadcast, and online media platforms across the state participated in the workshop.
