Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has reaffirmed his support for granting constitutional recognition to Nigeria’s traditional institutions, describing them as vital to the nation’s unity, culture, and stability.
Speaking at the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, Governor Uzodimma said the time had come to give legal status to the roles traditional rulers already play in governance and community development.
“The traditional institution remains one of Nigeria’s most enduring systems.
Its custodianship of culture, its ability to mediate disputes, and its place in the lives of the people make it indispensable to national stability,” he said.
He noted that the lack of constitutional backing for the traditional institution was a gap that needed to be filled, comparing the situation to a “long-standing union awaiting formal recognition.”
According to the governor, the call by royal fathers for constitutional inclusion is not a plea for privilege but a legitimate demand for clarity and protection of an institution that has withstood war, colonisation, and political instability.
Uzodimma assured the gathering that he would fully support any legislative or governmental effort to formalise the role of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s governance structure.
He commended the National Council of Traditional Rulers for their unity and commitment, describing their gathering as proof that the institution remains “alive, strong, and ready to lead where it must.”
“God bless our traditional institution. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he concluded.
