At least 236 people have died in widespread flooding that has hit 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) this year, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed in its 2025 Flood Dashboard report.

According to the agency, more than 409,000 people have been affected across 117 local government areas, with thousands forced from their homes as communities battle rising waters and extensive destruction of houses, roads, and farmlands.

Niger State recorded the highest number of deaths with 163 fatalities, followed by Adamawa with 59. Other affected states include Taraba (5 deaths), Sokoto (3), Jigawa and Yobe (2 each), and Gombe and Borno (1 each).

The floods have also left 135,764 people displaced, 115 missing, and 826 injured. NEMA further reported that 47,708 houses and 62,653 farmlands were destroyed nationwide.

A demographic breakdown shows that the floods have impacted 188,118 children, 125,307 women, 77,423 men, 18,866 elderly persons, and 2,418 people with disabilities.

By population impact, Adamawa recorded the highest number of affected persons with 60,608, followed by Lagos (57,951), Akwa Ibom (46,233), and Taraba (28,107). Other heavily hit states include Imo, Kaduna, Rivers, Abia, Edo, Kebbi, and Sokoto.

Flooding was also reported in parts of the FCT, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, and Ondo states.

NEMA said it continues to coordinate relief operations in collaboration with state emergency agencies, humanitarian partners, and local authorities to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance to displaced families.
