Nigeria has been re-elected to Part 2 of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), reaffirming its role in shaping global aviation policy.

The country’s representative, Ben Tukur, retained Nigeria’s seat during the ICAO’s 42nd Assembly in Montreal, Canada, after a closely contested vote involving 11 other African nations.

Tukur won with 163 votes out of 185 eligible member states, a result described as evidence of strong international confidence in Nigeria’s aviation leadership.

A statement released in Abuja by Tunde Moshood, special adviser on media and communications to Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo, said the re-election strengthens Nigeria’s position in international aviation governance.

Nigeria joins 11 other countries, including Egypt and South Africa, in Part 2 of the ICAO Council, which is reserved for states making significant contributions to international civil air navigation.

The Council, ICAO’s governing body, comprises 36 member states elected for three-year terms across three categories to ensure both geographical and functional balance.

Reacting to the outcome, Minister Keyamo called the victory a “proud moment for Nigeria and for Africa,” stressing that the re-election underscores the nation’s commitment to aviation safety, security, and sustainability.

He added that Nigeria’s presence on the Council would help advance African interests within the global aviation community.
