The Kano State Executive Council (SEC), under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved over N18.8 billion for key projects and programs across infrastructure, education, healthcare, and environmental sectors.

According to a statement by the Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the approvals were made during the Council’s 31st sitting held on Tuesday at the Council Chamber, Kwankwasiyya City, Kano.

A breakdown of the allocations shows that the Ministry of Works received the largest share of N11.2 billion for critical road works, drainage construction, township rehabilitation, solar-powered street lighting in several LGAs, and the completion of Kwankwaso township roads and drainage.

Other major approvals included the construction of a Government House Hospital and an open arena within the State Government House.

The education sector secured N4.3 billion, covering school feeding payments, provision of uniforms for Primary 1 pupils in the 2025/2026 session, and the rehabilitation of several burnt and dilapidated schools, including Government Girls Secondary Schools in Giginyu and Badawa.

The Ministry of Health received N129.6 million for the renovation of the female hostel at the School of Hygiene under the College of Health Sciences and Technology.

The higher education sector also benefited, with N216.8 million approved for new facilities at Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies.

For environmental interventions, N997.1 million was earmarked for solar boreholes in water-stressed communities, reinforced concrete drainage projects, fumigation across 115 strategic locations, and landscaping of Naibawa Yan Lemo Flyover.

Other approvals included N217 million for a new 32-seater bus for the School of Health Technology, Bebeji.

Beyond funding, the Council endorsed several policy measures. These include the transmission of two bills to the State House of Assembly on local government autonomy and the Kano State Anti-LBGTQ Bill 2024, relocation of Naibawa Yan Lemo Market to Kano Economic City, relocation of Kano Line from Audu Bako Secretariat to Naibawa Motor Park, and the implementation of the Kano State Women Economic Empowerment Policy 2025.

The Council also authorized the auction of obsolete vehicles and equipment, as well as the engagement of consultants to review stalled 5KM road projects and to oversee hotel and events centre operations in the state.

The SEC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering projects that uplift living standards, stressing that the approvals highlight the administration’s priorities in infrastructure, education, healthcare, environment, and women’s empowerment.

The Council noted that Governor Yusuf was honoured with five awards, including recognitions from the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria, West African College of Physicians, and students of Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies, for what organizers described as his “inspiration and result-oriented leadership.”
