Anambra State Government has unveiled plans to construct a second airport in Ndikelionwu, Orumba North Local Government Area.

The project, spearheaded by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, is part of his administration’s vision to transform Anambra into a smart megacity powered by innovation, infrastructure, and investment.

During an inspection tour of the proposed site, Mr. Martins Nwafor, Managing Director of the Chinua Achebe Cargo Airport and chairman of the newly constituted Airport and Aerotropolis Committee, said the new facility would not only expand aviation services but also serve as the nucleus of a broader aerotropolis model.

“We are envisioning an airport-driven city that integrates aviation infrastructure with commercial, residential, and logistics zones. This project will unlock massive economic opportunities and accelerate Anambra’s industrialisation,” Nwafor stated.

The first airport, located in Umueri, was launched in 2017 and completed in 2021 under former Governor Willie Obiano. With a second airport now in the works, Anambra aims to position itself as a leading transport and investment hub in southeastern Nigeria.

Geologists and geophysicists from the Anambra State Solid Minerals Development Company Limited have already begun technical assessments at the site to determine its suitability for construction.

The inspection team included key government officials such as Prof. Charles Ofoegbu, Managing Director of the Solid Minerals Development Company; AVM Ben Chiobi (Rtd.), Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Security; and architect Chukwudi Ezenwa, founder of Sliding Towers.

Leaders of the host community welcomed the development, pledging their full cooperation. Fabian Nwosu, former President-General of the Ndikelionwu Welfare Association, described the project as a life-changing opportunity for residents.

“This project brings hope to our people. The jobs and economic activity it will generate are beyond measure,” Nwosu said.

According to the government, the proposed airport will go beyond runways and terminals, evolving into an industrial park and logistics hub designed to attract both local and international investors.

“This isn’t just about flights,” Nwafor emphasized.

“It’s about creating an economic corridor that will power the future of Anambra.”
