Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has approved a major restructuring of the state’s Forest Guard, including a new minimum salary of N80,000 for operatives, as part of efforts to bolster security and curb deforestation.

The new measures were disclosed by the State Commander of the Forest Guard, Dr. Akinbayo Olasoji (DCP, Rtd.), during stakeholder engagement meetings across the state’s three senatorial districts in Agbani, Nsukka, and Awgu.

Olasoji, a former Deputy Commissioner of Police, explained that the recruitment of new operatives would prioritise integrity and community trust, with applicants endorsed by traditional rulers and town union leaders, who would also share responsibility for their conduct.

“We want trusted youths who understand their communities’ forests, rivers, and caves.

“They must not be involved in crime or drugs.

“This process will be free of politics and favouritism,” Olasoji said.

The commander added that the first batch of recruits would undergo a two-month training programme later this month in line with directives from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The revamped force will focus on disrupting criminal hideouts, rescuing victims, and safeguarding forest areas.

He also announced a clampdown on illegal logging, warning that those caught felling immature trees or engaging in deforestation would be arrested and prosecuted.

Local government chairmen and traditional rulers from all three zones pledged their support, describing the initiative as transparent, inclusive, and a source of meaningful employment for youths.

“We commend the government for embracing a restructured and effective forest protection system.

This will strengthen security while creating jobs,” said Igwe Herbert Ukuta, Chairman of the Enugu North Traditional Rulers’ Council.

Similarly, Igwe Daniel Njoku, Chairman of Aninri Traditional Rulers’ Council, praised Olasoji’s credibility and Governor Mbah’s commitment to reform, assuring that communities would cooperate in selecting committed youths.

The sensitisation tour concluded at Maryland Timber Market, where the commander, after the arrest of a suspected logging kingpin, declared an end to illegal deforestation in the state.
