Prominent Kenyan human rights activist and outspoken government critic, Boniface Mwangi, has declared his intention to run for president in the 2027 elections.
Mwangi’s announcement follows months of deadly anti-government protests against President William Ruto, which have left over 100 people dead since June 2024.
The 42-year-old activist, long known for his campaigns against corruption and police brutality, said Kenya is “broken and in danger of becoming a failed state.”
Unveiling his vision for a “new Kenya,” Mwangi vowed to prioritise ordinary citizens, arrest corrupt politicians, and build a nation rooted in justice, equity, and democratic values.
His candidacy will test whether the energy of youth-led street protests can translate into political momentum.
Rights groups have repeatedly accused the government of police abuses and of targeting protesters with terrorism-related charges.
Mwangi joins a growing field of contenders, including President Ruto, ahead of the 2027 race. His bid, like all others, awaits clearance from the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission.
