A human rights and civil society organization, led by Comrade Dr. Yahaya Danjuma Yusuf, has raised alarm over alleged plans by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to relocate the only emergency power backup transformer stationed in Zaria.

The 40MVA transformer, installed in the city three years ago, currently serves as the sole backup stabilizing electricity supply for Zaria and several neighbouring local government areas, including Sabon Gari, Giwa, Kudan, Makarfi, Ikara, Soba, and Pambeguwa.

Dr. Yusuf warned that the removal of the transformer would plunge the entire region into prolonged outages, disrupt schools, hospitals, businesses, and essential public services, and deepen the already fragile energy crisis in the area.

“This transformer is the lifeline of Zaria and its environs. Relocating it will amount to deliberate neglect of over a million citizens who deserve equal access to critical infrastructure like every other Nigerian,” he said.

The concern was triggered after a discussion allegedly involving individuals linked to the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO) was overheard in a commercial vehicle traveling from Kaduna to Zaria on Sunday.

The individuals reportedly hinted that TCN’s Kaduna Region was considering relocating the transformer.

Dr. Yusuf noted that the transformer also supports two newly built transmission lines and has previously survived similar threats of relocation through the intervention of a former TCN director.

He called on both elected representatives and traditional rulers in the region to act decisively.

The group outlined three key demands:

Immediate suspension of any plan to relocate the 40MVA transformer from Zaria.

A public clarification from TCN, KAEDCO, and the Ministry of Power on the transformer’s status.

A long-term electricity infrastructure plan to ensure a stable and sufficient supply across Zaria and neighbouring LGAs.

“We cannot afford silence on this issue. The well-being of our people depends on urgent action to protect this facility,” Dr. Yusuf stressed.

As of press time, neither TCN nor KAEDCO had responded to the allegations.
