Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has likened 15-year-old Max Dowman to Lionel Messi after the teenager impressed on his debut in the Gunners’ 5-0 win over Leeds on Saturday.
Dowman, who became Arsenal’s second-youngest player at 15 years and 234 days, caught Walcott’s eye with his dribbling and direct style of play.
“He carries the ball so well, he’s quicker with it, and he’s got that low centre of gravity like Messi,” Walcott said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.
“He glides past defenders, he’s got the stop-start movement – and he’s just so positive every time he gets the ball. It’s refreshing.”
Walcott, who broke into the Arsenal first team as a teenager himself, praised Dowman’s fearless approach and natural talent.
“He’s got ability you can’t teach. Watching him is never boring.”
But the ex-England winger also warned of the challenges that come with early fame.
“The biggest test will be how he handles the outside noise – social media, school life, walking down the street and being recognised. Having the right support network will be key.”
Dowman’s debut has already generated excitement among Arsenal fans, with Walcott convinced the youngster has the tools to thrive if carefully guided.
