The Trump administration has broadened its deportation strategy by arranging controversial agreements with foreign governments to accept migrants who are not their citizens, CBS reports.

Under the deals, Uganda was alleged to have agreed to take in non-criminal deportees from across Africa, while Honduras would accept migrants from other Spanish-speaking nations, including families with children.

The arrangements draw on the U.S. “safe third country” law, which allows asylum seekers to be rerouted to nations deemed capable of handling their claims.

Critics argue the policy shifts America’s asylum burden onto countries with fragile systems and poor human rights records.

Uganda, however, has denied striking such a deal, with its foreign minister insisting the country lacks capacity to host foreign deportees.

So far, South Sudan, Rwanda, and Eswatini have reportedly entered into similar agreements, drawing sharp criticism from rights groups.
