The United States has suspended most visa processing in Zimbabwe, citing unspecified concerns about the country’s government.
In a statement on Wednesday, the U.S. embassy in Harare said the suspension, which took effect on August 7, applies to nearly all visa categories except for diplomatic and official visas.
The embassy stressed that the move does not amount to a travel ban and that already issued visas remain valid.
The decision comes against the backdrop of previous U.S. measures targeting visa overstays, with a recent report showing Zimbabwe recorded a 10.57% overstay rate in 2023.
In a related development, the U.S. has introduced a bond requirement of up to $15,000 for certain visitor visa applicants from Zambia and Malawi.
The suspension has sparked concern among Zimbabweans, with families and communities worried about the potential social and economic impact.
