The Sokoto State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a scathing condemnation of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government, accusing it of driving Nigeria’s democracy toward collapse through calculated repression, manipulation of state institutions, and persecution of political opponents.
In a statement on Tuesday, the party denounced the arrest of former Sokoto State Governor and serving Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing it as “a shameless abuse of power and a direct assault on political freedom.”
According to the PDP, Tambuwal’s arrest was a politically motivated attempt to silence one of the APC’s fiercest critics and disrupt the growing alliance of progressive forces determined to challenge the current administration.
“This is not law enforcement; this is political warfare,” the statement declared.
“The EFCC’s actions reek of selective justice and vindictiveness, aimed squarely at destroying the credibility of one of Nigeria’s most respected public servants.”
The party alleged that the investigation into Tambuwal’s administration is based on recycled and discredited allegations previously dismissed for lack of merit.
It accused the EFCC of reviving politically convenient cases while ignoring widespread corruption among APC leaders.
“The hypocrisy is staggering.
“The same EFCC that turns a blind eye to brazen looting by APC chieftains now wants Nigerians to believe it has suddenly found the courage to investigate a man with one of the cleanest public service records in the country,” the PDP stated.
Reaffirming its loyalty to Tambuwal, the Sokoto PDP said no amount of intimidation, blackmail, or harassment would shake public confidence in his integrity.
It praised his record of fiscal discipline, transparency, and service, describing it as unblemished.
The party warned that the continued weaponization of state security agencies for political purposes would inflame public anger and hasten the APC’s political downfall. “This is a dangerous road for our democracy,” it cautioned.
“The people of Sokoto State know who Tambuwal is, his integrity, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice.
“No smear campaign or stage-managed probe will erase that legacy,” the statement read.
Calling on the EFCC and other security agencies to free themselves from political control, the PDP urged them to uphold the rule of law without fear or favour, warning that participating in political witch-hunts would destroy their credibility.
The statement concluded with a rallying call: “No matter how many times they try to intimidate us, we will not be silenced.
Our fight for justice, our defence of democracy, and our loyalty to the truth are unshakable. The APC may control the security agencies today, but they will never control the will of the Nigerian people.”
