A Senior Magistrate Court in Kano, presided over by Ibrahim Abubakar Mansur at the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre, has dismissed the First Information Report (FIR) against 37 #EndBadGovernance protesters and granted bail to 48 others.
The court’s decision, delivered on Friday, marked a significant development in the ongoing legal process involving the protesters. While the 37 individuals were discharged, the 48 protesters granted bail must deposit N1,000,000 each at the Registry of the Kano State High Court and provide two reliable sureties.
The protesters were represented by a coalition of legal professionals from the Centre for Human Rights and Social Advancement (CEFSAN), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ungogo and Kano Branches, the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo, Esq., from CEFSAN, confirmed the case has been adjourned to September 18, 2024, for further mention.
This ruling follows an earlier decision by another Senior Magistrate Court in Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano, presided over by Hadiza Rabi’u Bello, where 36 protesters were unconditionally discharged and 35 were granted bail after legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The cases of the protesters will continue to be reviewed, with the next hearing scheduled for 9 October 2024.
