The Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers has officially abolished the use of the title “Eze Ndigbo” by Igbo leaders residing outside Igbo land.

This decision was announced in a communiqué jointly signed by His Royal Majesty, Eze (Dr.) E.C. Okeke, CFR (Eze Imo), His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe (Council Leader), and the chairmen of the Traditional Rulers Councils of Enugu, Anambra, Abia, and Ebonyi States.

While commending the efforts of Igbo leaders in Diaspora in uniting Ndigbo and promoting peaceful relations with host communities, the Council emphasized the need to regulate the use of traditional titles.

According to the communiqué, the title “Eze” remains a sacred, community-based kingship position reserved solely for coronated rulers within Igbo land, as recognized by customs, traditions, and state laws.

The Council stressed that the title “Eze” is not honorary but signifies rulership over a defined kingdom or community.

“Only those enthroned through traditional rites and ceremonies, holding the “Ofo” (symbol of authority), can bear the title.

“No individual outside Igbo communities, whether within Nigeria or abroad, is permitted to use the title,” it added.

It however stated that to address controversies surrounding the misuse of the title, the Council announced “Onyendu Ndigbo” (Leader of Ndigbo) as the officially sanctioned title for Igbo leaders in Diaspora.

“This designation must now be used across all formal documents, public representations, and communications involving Igbo leaders abroad.”

The Traditional Rulers warned that failure to comply with this directive will be viewed as defiance of Igbo cultural authority and disregard for judicial rulings on the matter.

They urged all concerned leaders to adopt the new title in the interest of unity and respect for traditional norms.

The Council extended a message of partnership and goodwill to Igbo leaders abroad, encouraging them to embrace this resolution for the preservation of Igbo cultural dignity and collective progress.
