Kogi State Government has commenced the distribution of fertilizer worth ₦3.2 billion to support more than 30,000 farmers across the state’s 21 Local Government Areas.
This was revealed by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Timothy Ojomah, during a discussion with the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah.
He stated that the initiative is part of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s agricultural development agenda aimed at boosting productivity in key crop value chains such as rice, maize, and cassava.
Hon. Ojomah explained that the beneficiaries were identified through a comprehensive enumeration and verification exercise conducted in 2024.
The process involved collaboration with commodity associations and other stakeholders to ensure that only genuine farmers benefit from the distribution.
The Commissioner emphasized that the program includes a strong capacity-building component to ensure the correct application of the soluble fertilizers.
He highlighted the state’s investment in farmer training and the deployment of agricultural extension workers who are actively providing technical support and monitoring across farming communities.
According to him, the earlier training sessions brought together representatives from various commodity associations, who are now expected to pass on their knowledge to fellow farmers in a “train-the-trainer” model, promoting widespread skill transfer and improved farming practices.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to agricultural development and food security, Hon. Ojomah noted that Governor Ododo remains dedicated to empowering farmers with both modern inputs and the practical knowledge needed to drive productivity and ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
