Chadian opposition leader and former Prime Minister Succès Masra has ended his hunger strike after a week without food, his legal team confirmed on Monday.

Masra, who has been in detention since May 16, began the hunger strike last Tuesday to protest the charges against him.

His lawyers said he remains physically weakened but “morally combative” and decided to suspend the strike following strong advice from his doctor due to the medication he must take.

Masra is facing multiple charges, including incitement to hatred and revolt, complicity in armed gang activity, murder, arson, and desecration of graves.

Authorities accuse him of provoking violence through a public statement linked to a May 14 attack in Mandakao, where 42 people—mainly women and children—were killed.

The arrest has sparked growing protests.

On Saturday, about 20 women from his party, the Transformateurs, staged a symbolic protest in their undergarments in N’Djamena, demanding his immediate release.

Masra remains a prominent figure in southern Chad, where many—particularly Christians—feel politically and economically sidelined by the predominantly Muslim government based in the capital.

The case continues to fuel tensions in a country already grappling with deep political divisions.
