Rival youth groups, vigilante members, and hunters in Kano State have come together in a historic meeting aimed at curbing violence, drug abuse, and street clashes in the state’s communities.

The peace initiative, described as non-partisan and people-focused, was convened by prominent Kano politician and philanthropist, Abdulkareem Abdussalam Zaura, popularly known as AA Zaura.

Speaking to journalists, Zaura explained that while the initiative was part of his political vision, it was deliberately separated from politics due to the urgent and collective nature of the crisis. “What is happening in Kano today goes beyond party politics. This is about the future of our youth and the safety of our communities,” he stated.

He stressed that the gathering represents the “spirit of Kano”—a shared commitment to peaceful coexistence and a united front against violence, regardless of political or social divisions.

“All the participants here today want the same thing—a peaceful Kano. They each have thousands of followers, and their influence can help stop Daba fights and youth clashes if used positively,” Zaura added.

The Daba subculture, often linked to street violence, drug use, and petty crime, has been a growing concern in Kano, prompting calls for grassroots interventions.

The meeting brought together leaders of rival Daba factions, vigilante groups, and hunters, offering a platform for open dialogue and collective action. One of the key outcomes was the creation of a 20-member committee tasked with engaging youth leaders across the state.

The committee is expected to investigate the root causes of youth unrest, propose practical solutions, and help reintegrate marginalized youths into society.

Zaura outlined future plans including skills training, educational support for school dropouts, and small business empowerment to help youths become self-reliant and productive members of society.

He also noted that the initiative is already gaining traction, with several local influencers urging their followers to renounce violence. “Some leaders have even assured us there will be no more Daba clashes in their areas,” he said. “Their willingness to take responsibility shows how much impact this movement can have.”
